Best on a south/SW/W swell. Lots of jetties to choose from. Watch the current on a hard south swell. Summer time fun! Also, keep in mind blackball. It starts up around 11AM and that means no surfing, due to the insanely large amount of people that take vacations to Newport in the summer.

Newport's surfing is seasonal, there are some spots that are good in the summer and some other spots that are good in the winter. Generally upper west Newport has the better surf. In summer, the place is a zoo and you have to deal with Blackball, so get on it early! This is also called the hottest 100 yards in surfing. This is one of the focal points for the surf industry because all of the big surf companies are located in Orange County. On any given day you will see some sort of pro out there going bonkers!

Summer time power. The jetty refracts south swells into a hideous massive barrel that is sometimes makeable. People pay dearly here because of the power of the wave slamming you on the bottom in very shallow water. One of the most entertaining things to do in Newport beach in the summertime is to go to the Wedge during a big south swell and watch. The wave breaks so close to shore that it's like you are out there and the crowd really gets into it! It's a real spectacle. Be careful if you decide to bodysurf it. The lifegaurds are really skilled but that shouldn't let you be ok with getting in over your head. Know your limits, this is one of those spots that can literally make you pay dearly.

Reef shelf that gets decent with some small south swell and a taste of NW wind swell. REally fun beach to hang out at. During high tide the skimboarders come out and put on a show. That's a blast to watch too! The beach gets really packed in the summertime. If you need equipment go to Laguna Surf and Sport. They are nice and will hook you up.

Reef Break left that loves a south swell and gets better in quality the bigger it gets. Ledgy take offs with kind of a fat wall. There is an outer reef that will let you roll in when the south swell is big enough. Lots of skimboarders up and down the beach when the tide is high. In fact, skims will paddle out and surf too. Cool vibe. Respect the local crew.

Black ball flag from 9-5, but you can surf north side of the pier all day.
